Sensible heat definition

Can sensible heat be measured by thermometer? What is sensible and latent heat? Definition of sensible heat. As the name implies, sensible heat is the heat that you can feel. It is a function of how much material there is and the type of material being heated.

The temperature change can come from the absorption of sunlight by the soil or the air itself. Or it can come from contact with the warmer air caused by release of latent heat (by direct conduction). When an object is heate its temperature rises as heat is added. The increase in heat is called sensible heat.

Similarly, when heat is removed from an object and its temperature falls, the heat removed is also called sensible heat. Heat that causes a change in temperature in an object is called sensible heat. Latent Heat : Latent heat is the amount of energy that is either absorbed or released during a phase transition at a constant temperature. Its name comes from the fact that it can be sensed as a change in temperature.

Sensible heat definition

Transfer of this type of heat energy occurs as either conduction or convection. It is the energy moving from one system to another that changes the temperature rather than changing its phase. Sensible Heat Load and Required Air Volume Chart. For example, it warms water rather than melting ice. Technically speaking, sensible heat refers to the amount of energy needed to increase or decrease the temperature of some substance, independent of phase changes (like a gas-to-liquid phase change).

The volumes needed to store energy in the scale that world needs are extremely large. Appreciating this difference is fundamental to understanding why refrigerant is used in cooling systems. Cooling via perspiration is affected by latent and sensible heat. When there is a breeze, evaporative cooling is highly effective. Heat is dissipated away from the body due to the high latent heat of vaporization of water.

As previously state sensible cooling load is one of two types of cooling loads that define the design cooling load. The other cooling load is the latent cooling load. A sensible person makes good decisions and judgements based on reason rather than emotion. This water is subsequently condensed within a storm system, thereby releasing latent heat energy.

When a tropical cyclone moves over lan this energy is severely depleted and the circulation of the winds is consequently weakened. When a material changes temperature, it absorbs or releases sensible heat. The amount of heat depends on the mass, material, and temperature change (Q = mc∆T). The formulation of the surface flux calculations assumes that transfer occurs mainly in convective cells whose spectrum peaks at wavelength s on the order of one km. So sensible heat is that heat which can be sensed.

Sensible heat definition

The term is used in contrast to a latent heat , which is the amount of heat exchanged that is hidden, meaning it occurs without change of temperature. When we use a thermometer, we are measuring sensible heat. When two substances with different temperatures are brought into contact with each other, the substance with the higher temperature transfers heat to the substance with the lower temperature in a process called sensible heat transfer.
