Chilled water system how it works

Chilled water systems provide cooling to a building by using chilled water to absorb heat from the building’s spaces. At the heart of the water chilled system , a chiller removes heat from water by means of a refrigeration cycle. The exception is they use water in the coil rather than refrigerant. The refrigeration circuit is the most technical part of how a chiller works.


In the case of chillers , heat is taken from the fluid being chilled and transferred to the ambient air. It cools water to between and degrees Fahrenheit.

The chilled water is then piped throughout. This can be a versatile system where the water pipes work like the evaporator coils in a standard air conditioner. This cool fluid removes heat from the process and the warm fluid returns to the chiller. The process water is the means by which heat transfers from the process to the chiller. The “chilled water” leaves the evaporator at around 6°C (4°F) and is pushed around the building by the chilled water pump.

In compression chiller, compressors are used to compress the refrigerant vapor in the condenser where it becomes liquid.

It then returns to the chiller where the chiller removes the heat from the water using the refrigeration process. Chillers are used to generate chille or col water which is pumped around the building to provide air conditioning by collecting unwanted heat. There are two main types of chillers, Air cooled and Water cooled. The term “Air” or “Water” cooled just tells the engineer how the chillers condenser is rejecting heat from the building.


The piping system along with the parts of the boiler or chiller that have water cannot handle this expansion and contraction with breaking or busting open. How Expansion Tanks Work. Heat removal is based on the principle that heat will move from a hotter source to a colder source. They both have an evaporator, compressor, condenser and an expansion valve.


The main difference is that one uses air to fuel condenser cooling and the other uses water. While the water leaves in one en water goes to the shell at another end. You can use a plate heat exchanger evaporator for fluid cooling or chilled water uses.


Stainless steel evaporators, in the meantime, they are suitable for drink and food uses for example portable water systems or batch cooling. A marine chiller system , also known as a marine chilled water air conditioning system , is the optimal marine AC unit for larger boats and yachts. One set is dedicated to chilled water , kept between degrees F and degrees F. Another set of pipes is dedicated to hot water , generally kept between 1degrees F and 2degrees F. The pipes run to air handlers, which use the chilled or hot water to change the air temperature. Water is cooled to a predetermined set-point that is set within the chiller itself.


A chiller can be either an air conditioning system or a consumable refrigeration system.

Chillers or Freezers in refrigeration system are classified based on the temperature maintained inside the system. As its name suggest, this system makes use of water as its secondary refrigerant. Chiller is used to remove heat from the water which is then circulated through other components to absorb heat from the space.


A 3-way valve, as the name implies, has three openings. When functioning as a two-inlet, single-outlet system , these valves can be used for mixing fluids.
