Fire extinguisher expiry date

What should I do with an expired fire extinguisher? What is the shelf life of fire extinguishers? When will your fire extinguishers expire?


Fire extinguisher does not have an expiry date, but not having an expiry date does not mean it will last forever. Both the cylinder and the content do not expire, but it can lose its functionality with time.

Some extinguishers have one tag, with the expiration date and inspection record and the status of the extinguisher written into a space. Others have a separate, usually yellow-colored status tag, also called the cylinder tag. This tag will tell you whether the extinguisher is full, in service, or has been discharged and is empty.


Even if there’s no expiration date, it won’t last forever. To find out the age of an extinguisher you need to look for dates stamped on the cylinder body, printed on the extinguisher label or printed on the extinguisher itself. Sometimes the date stamp is hidden under the plastic ring around the neck of an extinguisher or under the plastic boot of the extinguisher.

Portable aerosol fire extinguishers come with a use by date which should be clearly marked on the canister. This period is usually around years from the date of manufacture but it will vary based on the brand. And it’s an important question—if you’ve had your fire extinguisher for a few years (think five or more), you might be thinking it’s time for fire extinguisher replacement.


One major misconception when reading a fire extinguisher tag is that the date on the tag is an expiration date. This is a question that we get all the time. The date on the tag shows the date the extinguisher was last serviced or inspected.


If there is any damages on the fire extinguisher , you are advised to refer the expert or make a replacement.

Having a brand new fire extinguisher under the sink AND an older fire extinguisher that most likely still works. The first extended extinguisher service for powders, foam and water extinguishers needs to be carried out years from the date of initial commissioning or years from the date of manufacture. If you have an unused disposable fire extinguisher and the pin does not pop back up, the unit should be replaced.
