Oil mist detector

How does oil mist detector work? Is mist a solid liquid or gas? Why is lubrimist oil mist? Oil Mist detectors are used for this purpose.

Crankcase of each cylinder is connected to the OM which continuously checks the air sample from each cylinder.

If the amount of mist increases, OMD raises an alarm. If you install an oil mist detector , it will detect the formation of oil mist before it reaches a dangerous level. All alarms from oil mist detectors and bearing temperature monitors, (no matter how suspect the instrument may be), are to be treated as an emergency situation and the engine stopped. The oil mist detector uses a photoelectric cell to measure small increases in oil density.

A motor driven fan continuously draws samples of crankcase oil mist through a measuring tube. An increased meter reading and an alarm will result if any crack case sample contains excessive mist when compared to either clean air or to the other crankcase compartments. An oil mist detection system can stop damage to the engine an most importantly injury to engine room personnel by allowing early detection of engine wear and bearing damage which could lead to an explosive environment within the engine.

This is achieved without sample pipes and with minimum cabling. Each detector head monitors a single crankspace and is a stand-alone device. Oil mist may form when high pressure fuel oil , lubricating oil , hydraulic oil , or other oil is sprayed through a narrow crack, or when leaked oil connects with a high temperature surface, vaporizes, and comes in contact with low air temperature. This is a preventive step avoiding crankcase explosion taking place. The suction system is connected to the Valve Box 1(4).

SOLAS - International Convention for the Safety of Life at Sea The SOLAS regulations for fire precaution require that: “Engines of 2kW and above or having cylinders of more than 300mm bore shall be provided with crankcase oil mist detector s or engine bearing temperature monitors or equivalent devices. Inhalation of either mineral and synthetic oil mist can cause respiratory irritation, dizziness, nausea and even unconsciousness. The detector has been developed for use in enclosed oil rig wellheads areas, generator rooms and turbine enclosures. The presence of oil mist also in the pipes of a compressed air system being coated with oil.

The compact oil mist detector type TGL0… TGL0for engine room monitoring of diesel and gas engines is a reliable and inexpensive motor protection system to measure the opacity of the engine room atmosphere and the engine room pressure. It is mounted in the engine ventilation and therefore needs no time-consuming piping on the engine. Each of the Detector heads monitors a single crank space. It is part of a safety system that secures the life and health of the operating staff and prevents heavy damages to the engine. These all oil mist Detector has recognized that oil mist is first warning of future lubrication problem, and all these OMD detect it very successful, false-alarm is safe system for engine protection against crankcase flare-ups began by the ignition of oil mist.

Crankcase flare-ups, which are began by overheating of the moving mechanisms inside engines creating a possibly explosive oil mist , have distressing financial costs and can risk lives. The modern oil - mist detector system is designed to measure an excess of oil mist in the crankcase and camshaft drive units. The detectors are self contained units bolted onto the crankcase doors the sensors being inside the crankcase.

The camshaft timing gear being similarly protected. The OMD continuously monitors the density of oil mist in the crankcase of a diesel engine and will signal an alarm if the density exceeds a preset threshold.
