Polycarbonate properties

What are the uses of polycarbonate? Is polycarbonate roofing good? What is the shear strength of plastic? Properties and processing.

PC is commonly used for plastic lenses in eyewear, in medical devices, automotive components, protective gear,. Glass filled grades of polycarbonate show good chemical and moisture resistance too.

The most important diol is bisphenol A (BPA). It also has a high heat deflection temperature and absorbs very little moisture. Thermal properties : PC is practically self-extinguishable. Resistance to fire, rated per UL9 ranges from HB to V0- Vaccording to type, wall thickness and stabilization. It is available commercially in both pellet and sheet form.

Outstanding properties include impact strength and scratch resistance. ASTM D7Water Absorption 0. Compact discs, riot shields, vandal proof glazing, baby feeding bottles, electrical components, safety helmets and headlamp lenses are all typical applications for PC. The polycarbonate properties of strength, impact resistance and unfilled grade transparency make polycarbonate (PC) a desired material for certain transparent structural uses, as well as displays.

The properties of PC include four common variations. This page shows summary ranges across all of them. For more specific values, follow the links immediately below. Search the MatWeb database of technical data sheets for the polycarbonate name or properties such as flexural modulus, density, optical transmission, or melt flow.

Plastic bottles, films, cups, and fibers are thermoplastic plastics.

The ultimate natural polymers are the deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) and ribonucleic acid (RNA) that define life. Spider silk, hair, and horn are protein polymers. Starch can be a polymer as is cellulose in wood. MPa C Heat-deflection temperature - 1. A variety of modifications can be made to improve impact resistance, toughness, and heat resistance. Polymers abound in nature.

The impact resistance can be amplified by increasing the proportions of polybutadiene in relation to styrene and also acrylonitrile,. Mainly by virtue of the aromatic rings incorporated into the polymer chain, PC has exceptional stiffness. It is also highly transparent, transmitting approximately percent of visible light. However, applications of polycarbonates are limited due to high notch sensitivity and poor scratch resistance.

It is an amorphous kind of material which does not possess the ordered form of a characteristic of crystalline solids.

Though all varieties of polycarbonate exhibit exceptional tensile strength, the actual numbers vary somewhat from product to product. ABS has impact resistance, good processability, good mechanical properties , high heat distortion temperature, and gloss property. The main physical difference between the two is that one can be reused time and again, and the other cannot.

Underwriters Laboratories in the USA. If minimum certifiable properties are require please contact your local SABIC Innovative Plastics representative or SABIC Innovative Plastics Quality Services Department.
